In spite of the fact that he was overall the best student in Wajir District in the National pre-high school Certificate of Primary Education Examination of 1973, with straight A's, he was denied entry to any of the national schools of his dream. Reason, he was told, 'National Schools are too expensive, you cannot afford them.' Students with much lesser points were selected for top schools instead. It was then he decided to take the road not yet taken and join the elite Kenya Air Force at the earliest opportunity. It made all the difference. He retired from the Air Force in the rank of major.
It was while in the Air Force, Kenya Military Academy and in Pakistan as Assistant Defence Adviser there, that he studied for the degrees of Bachelor of commerce, Bachelor Arts- public administration at the University of the Punjab, Lahore. He later did MBA Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the University of Nairobi and Chartered Public Secretaries Finals
at National Institute of Public Administration, Lahore. Later he did his PHD Entrepreneurship Small Business Development and Administration at the University of Nairobi.
Khalid has wide interest, including public service and literature. Has four sons and three daughters who normally give him greatest pride and satisfaction. Some of the children live in Europe. He said to them ' no school would be too expensive for you, God willing. The world is your country'. He lives in Nairobi with his wife, Halima
